Incontinence
Incontinence for urine and/or feces is an annoying complaint for dog, cat and owner and can have several causes.
- Paralysis and blockages. The bladder has 2 areas of innervation: the bladder receives nerve stimulation from 2 levels of the spine. Stimulation from the lower part of the thoracic spine causes relaxation of the bladder wall and closure of the sphincter of the bladder (reservoir function). Stimulation from the nerves from the low back causes tightening of the bladder wall and relaxation of the sphincter muscle (micturition function> urination). When these 2 levels no longer work well together due to pressure on the spinal cord at or between these 2 levels, incontinence can occur. Chiropractically, I often encounter the level of the third lumbar vertebra in incontinence. The anus only has innervation from the low back. However, damage at a higher level can also cause fecal incontinence.
- Degenerative LumboSacral Stenosis. This condition can lead to mild leakage of urine due to pressure on the cauda equina (the lower part of the exiting nerves of the spinal cord). This urine leakage is load-dependent. Jumping, climbing stairs, stretched trot, long swim, playing wildly can aggravate the complaint.
- Sterilization. After sterilization, mild urinary incontinence may occur as a complication.
- Urinary tract infection
- No obvious cause.
With any form of incontinence, it is important to know the cause of the complaint, as then therapy can be instituted if necessary. Therefore, discuss this complaint with your veterinarian. If no cause is found, chiropractic treatment is certainly recommended.
With incontinence, the use of incontinence material is pleasant and hygienic for dog, cat and owner. The ideal solution depends on the amount of urine loss, on the form of incontinence (urine and/or feces), as well as on the character of your dog or cat. The Medical Pet Shirt is not suitable for incontinence for feces.
